Artistic NYC Elopement Photos at Manhattan City Hall

Solomon and Nan’s Manhattan City Hall marriage ceremony was modern, artistic, and incorporated thoughtful styling. Because of this, we knew that their NYC elopement photos should feel more like stills from an indie film than what you might expect from a traditional courthouse ceremony. I had so much fun with more of an editorial approach documenting their day! Their courthouse wedding is a great reminder that choosing an intimate wedding doesn’t mean sacrificing creativity. If anything, it gives you more room to make every detail feel intentional.

A Manhattan City Hall Marriage Ceremony with an Editorial Feel

Manhattan City Hall is one of the most popular places to elope in New York. However, its popularity doesn’t mean that two galleries have to look alike. Solomon and Nan leaned into an artistic vision from the very beginning, so we went for imagery that felt cinematic and unexpected. 

Inside City Hall, we made the most of every corner. The iconic green sofa became one of my favorite spots to photograph them, adding an unexpected pop of color that perfectly complemented their clean, minimalist style. It’s the same sofa I’ve photographed before, yet these images feel entirely different because they reflect who Solomon and Nan are as a couple. We leaned into the Polaroids (an add-on option for elopements) which were incorporated into a few of the digital images as well. I love these because my couples are able to leave with tangible photos the same day and they’re so much fun to incorporate.

What should I wear for  NYC elopement photos?

I’ve said it before, but I’ll say it again: having a courthouse wedding doesn’t mean you have to cut corners! Investing time and effort into your wardrobe is going to make your day, and your gallery, more memorable. Because this was a winter wedding, Nan wore a beautiful winter coat. She was as thoughtful about this choice as she was her dress, and it paid off.

Solomon & Nan’s wardrobe played a huge role in bringing our artistic vision together. Nan’s knit mini dress paired with sleek black boots felt modern and timeless at the same time, while Solomon’s tailored suit kept everything polished without feeling overly formal. Overall, these two are a couple who really appreciate art in general, especially photography, and their styling on their wedding day did a great job of communicating that.

How to Apply for a NYC Marriage License

Apply for your marriage license ahead of time using the New York City Clerk’s marriage license information. If possible, book a later afternoon ceremony since crowds inside City Hall are often lighter later in the day, though those appointments can be more difficult to secure.

Do I need an appointment for a NYC courthouse wedding?

Yes, and the appointment slots typically open about 3 weeks in advance. When working with a photographer like myself, however, you’ll want to reach out to them before you actually book the appointment with city hall.

Can guests come to a NYC City Hall wedding?

Yes! However, if you’re inviting guests, everyone should arrive together before entering security. Be prepared for a little waiting throughout the process, but don’t think of it as downtime. Some of my favorite photographs often happen while couples are simply soaking in the excitement before their ceremony.
