Playful Rockwood Hall State Park Engagement Session

From the moment we started exploring Rockwood Hall State Park during Tyler & Ashley’s engagement session, they brought such an easygoing energy to the evening. Between the Hudson River views, golden sunset light, and plenty of laughter along the way, the session felt relaxed from beginning to end. Rockwood Hall is one of those locations that somehow feels different every time I photograph there, and Tyler and Ashley’s session was the perfect reminder of why I keep coming back.

Rockwood Hall State Park

Located in Sleepy Hollow, New York, Rockwood Hall Park sits within Rockefeller State Park and offers some of the most diverse scenery in the Hudson Valley. One of my favorite things about photographing here is how much variety exists within a relatively small area. During a single session, we can move from open fields to dramatic stone walls, then over to towering trees that look like they belong in a storybook. In the spring, blooming pink flowers add another layer of color. We didn’t visit this area during Tyler & Ashley’s session, but there is a row of evergreen trees I love to include for winter photos. No matter the season, the Hudson River sunsets are some of the most beautiful you’ll find anywhere in Westchester County.

Even though I photograph sessions here often, no two galleries ever look the same. The landscape changes throughout the year, and every couple brings their own energy to the space. If you’re looking for a location that feels natural, scenic, and effortlessly romantic, it’s easy to see why Rockwood Hall remains one of my favorite places to photograph couples. New York Engagement Photos at Rockwood Hall

Like many couples, Tyler and Ashley started their session by telling me they were “terrible at posing.” Needless to say, I hear that line all the time. The funny thing is that great engagement photos rarely come from perfect posing. When a couple is in tune & comfortable being themselves, the photos become next level. We had so much fun! They explored the trails, laughed through the prompts, and fully embraced the experience. Those little moments ended up creating some of my favorite images from the session.

One of the things I loved most about working with them was how quickly we connected. When couples feel comfortable with their photographer, everything becomes easier. The nerves start to disappear, conversations flow naturally, and the photos begin to feel less like a photoshoot and more like spending time together.

Helpful Tips for Rockwood Hall State Park Engagement Photos

If you’re considering your own Rockwood Hall State Park engagement session, here are a few things worth knowing before you arrive.

The entrance can be a little tricky to find, so I recommend searching “Rockwood Hall Trail” in your GPS. There’s a small free parking lot on Kendal Way near the trail entrance. If that lot is full, you can also park at the Phelps Hospital garage on North Broadway and take the stairs down to the park.

Once you arrive, expect a short two-to-three-minute walk uphill before reaching many of the main photo locations. If you’re planning to wear heels, bringing comfortable shoes for the walk is always a good idea.  One of the biggest advantages of this location is how much space there is to explore, but you definitely need to be prepared for the steps you’ll get in during the session. The park is part of a much larger trail system, so there are countless spots for portraits throughout the property. It’s also a great location for bringing simple props like a bouquet, blanket, or picnic setup to personalize your session.
